Eli Erlick traces a lineage from Magnus Hirschfeld’s 1923 diagram, through Harry Benjamin’s 1966 Sex Orientation Scale and Virginia Prince’s 1965 charts, to the transgender umbrella and the many educational graphics of the 1990s and 2010s. Some older models were flawed and hierarchical, but they show that people have long tried to understand gender diversity visually.
