Spain Moves to Criminalise Conversion Therapy with Prison Penalties
Spain aims at penalizing so-called “conversion therapy” – practices that attempt to change a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.
The reform, passed by Congress on 25 June 2026, would amend the Penal Code to punish these abuses with prison sentences of six months to two years, as well as fines. It applies even when supposed “consent” has been given, recognizing that pressure from families, institutions or religious groups can make such consent meaningless.
