LGBTQ refugees in the Gorom camp in South Sudan are threatened by forced eviction

LGBTQ refugees in the Gorom camp in South Sudan are facing forced eviction by the South Sudanese government, which wants them to relocate to Juba city. This move would leave them with less protection and limited support from the UN refugee agency UNHCR.

UNHCR has attempted to protect LGBTQ refugees in Gorom and Kakuma camp in Kenya, but resettlement quotas have dropped, leaving most refugees without immediate relocation prospects.

A UNHCR spokesperson has confirmed that hostility from local communities has increased, prompting the South Sudanese government to push for relocation. While UNHCR is advocating against forced evictions, it lacks funding for emergency responses, leaving refugees vulnerable to homophobia, transphobia, and displacement. The situation remains dire. Moving LGBTQ refugees into Juba without proper support could lead to disaster.
