Last week the UK Government announced an indefinite ban on puberty blockers for under-18s with gender dysphoria. Model, Activist and Elle Contributing Editor Maxim Magnus explains her fears for teens and the whole trans community following the news.

Maxim Magnus (photo), a transgender model and activist, has been vocal about the challenges faced by the transgender community, particularly in the fashion industry. She emphasizes the importance of authentic representation and the need for systemic change to prevent further trauma among transgender individuals.

She points out that when society seeks to unite people, it often does so by creating a common adversary, and unfortunately, transgender individuals have been placed in that role. This dynamic contributes to the marginalization and trauma experienced by the transgender community.

Too many Democrats in US Senate failed transgender people (+ more trans news)

37 Democratic Senators Voted To Pass Anti-Trans NDAA. Here Are Their Names.
(Photo of Senator Mark Kelley from Arizona)

On December 19, 2024, the U.S. Senate passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which includes a provision removing healthcare coverage for gender-affirming care for transgender family members of armed service personnel.

This marks the first anti-LGBTQ+ provision passed by Congress in years, raising concerns about future legislative actions affecting transgender individuals. Senator Tammy Baldwin, along with 20 other Democrats, introduced an amendment to remove the anti-trans language from the bill.

However, Democratic leadership did not allow a vote on this amendment, potentially to avoid forcing senators to publicly take a stance on transgender rights. Consequently, the bill proceeded to a final vote, where 37 Democratic senators voted in favor of the NDAA with the anti-trans provision intact.

The bill now awaits President Joe Biden’s decision to either sign it into law or issue a veto.

Disney hides trans character’s identity (+ more transgender news)

Pixar’s upcoming series ‘Win or Lose’ once promised a groundbreaking moment for transgender representation in children’s animation. However, Disney has cut dialogue acknowledging a trans character’s identity.

Disney has removed a transgender storyline from Pixar’s upcoming animated series Win or Lose, scheduled for release on Disney+ in December 2024. The series, which follows a middle school softball team, originally included a transgender character voiced by actress Chanel Stewart.

While the character remains, dialogues referencing gender identity have been cut. A Disney spokesperson stated that the decision allows parents to discuss such topics with their children on their own terms. Stewart expressed disappointment, emphasizing the importance of transgender representation in media.

This move aligns with Disney’s recent pattern of modifying or removing LGBTQ+ content, including the shelving of an episode of Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur featuring a transgender athlete storyline.

Is Bluesky willing to fight transphobia for real? (+more transgender news)

Bluesky faces its first LGBTQ+ safety test as users call for anti-trans podcaster Jesse Singal ban.

Bluesky, a social media platform that gained popularity as a safe space for marginalized communities, is facing controversy over the presence of anti-trans writer and podcaster Jesse Singal. Originally a refuge for LGBTQ+ users and people of color fleeing the hostile environment of Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter), Bluesky now hosts over 25 million users, but the inclusion of figures like Singal is sparking tension.

Singal, identified by GLAAD as spreading anti-trans misinformation, is reportedly the most blocked user on Bluesky. Despite the platform’s advanced moderation tools, including custom feeds, algorithms, and block lists, users fear his presence threatens the inclusive community they sought. Some accuse him of harassing trans individuals and have called for his ban.
