LGBTQ+ Identification Holds at 9% in U.S. 1.1% say they are transgender.

Gallup’s latest national polling finds that 9% of U.S. adults identify as LGBTQ+, a figure that has held steady since 2024 but remains more than double the rate recorded in 2012.

More than half of LGBTQ+ adults identify as bisexual, representing about 5% of the entire U.S. adult population. Smaller shares identify as gay (17%), lesbian (16%), or transgender (12%), with an additional 6% choosing identities such as queer or pansexual.

Nearly 23% of adults under 30 identify as LGBTQ+, compared with 10% of those aged 30–49 and 3% or fewer among older groups.
